The Gates Foundation has been largely lauded in mass media as it funds health projects and champions reforms of public education. What has gone largely unnoticed by mass media and most scholars is that the Gates Foundation is the largest player in a fundamental transformation of educational philanthropy: it is setting the agenda for modeling public education in the United States on venture capital. Despite its massive size and influence, the Gates Foundation is but one piece of a vast network of venture philanthropies in education.

The possibility of expanding the business and becoming profitable depended upon getting more investor capital. Investors needed to see evidence that Edison was superior quality to the public schools.
